Alicante Airport to Torrevieja: Bus, Taxi or Hire Car?

The easiest journey to Torrevieja is not necessarily the fastest one on paper. If you are landing with two suitcases, meeting an estate agent that afternoon or travelling with children, the last part of the trip matters just as much as the ride from the airport.

Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport is the main arrival point for many visitors to the southern Costa Blanca. Torrevieja is straightforward to reach, but the right option depends on where you are staying, not simply whether your ticket says “Torrevieja”. A flat near the centre, a villa outside town and a viewing itinerary stretching into Orihuela Costa are three very different journeys.

The short answer: which transfer should you choose?

  • Direct bus: a sensible choice if you are travelling light and can easily reach your accommodation from Torrevieja bus station.
  • Official airport taxi: convenient for a door-to-door journey, especially with luggage, children or a late arrival. Ask for a fare estimate before travelling.
  • Pre-booked private transfer: useful when several people are travelling together or when you need child seats, extra luggage space or an agreed meeting point.
  • Hire car: worth considering if your stay includes beaches, residential developments or property viewings spread across Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Guardamar and Pilar de la Horadada.

There is no universal winner. Think about your arrival hour, the actual address of your accommodation and whether you need a car for the following days.

Alicante Airport to Torrevieja by direct bus

Aena, the Spanish airport operator, lists a direct, non-stop coach between Alicante–Elche Airport and Torrevieja. Its general route information describes a journey of about 40 minutes. That is not a promise of your end-to-end travel time: published schedules can allow longer, and they do not include baggage collection, waiting for the bus or getting from the station to your front door.

The route is associated with Costa Azul, the operator also identified locally with the Avanza group. Buy or check tickets through Costa Azul’s official airport-bus page rather than relying on an old timetable found in a search result. Confirm the departure point, ticket conditions and time for your particular travel date.

Where does the bus arrive?

The bus takes you to Torrevieja bus station, not to every beach or residential area. Torrevieja Town Hall lists the pedestrian entrance at Calle del Mar, 40, with the bus entrance and exit on Calle Antonio Machado, 137. There is a taxi rank at the station, which helps if your accommodation is too far to walk with luggage.

If you are staying in La Mata, Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca or elsewhere outside the centre, plan that onward leg separately. A destination labelled “Torrevieja” in a holiday-home advert does not always mean the city-centre bus stop is nearby.

What to check before buying your ticket

  • Your scheduled landing time plus passport control or baggage collection, if applicable.
  • The last suitable departure on your specific travel day; do not assume late-night service.
  • The airport stop location and whether you should book in advance.
  • Luggage rules and accessibility arrangements if these matter for your party.
  • How you will reach your accommodation after arriving at the bus station.

For the return journey, start with your flight’s check-in and security requirements, then work backwards. Do not use the published bus journey time as your entire airport buffer.

Taxi or private transfer: when the extra convenience pays off

A taxi removes the need to make a second connection after reaching Torrevieja bus station. This can be particularly valuable after a delayed flight, with small children, or when your address is in a residential area away from the centre.

Aena identifies the official airport taxi services as Radio Taxi Elche and Servitaxi Elche. Their vehicles have a green stripe and the Elche coat of arms on the front doors. Aena also publishes the airport taxi booking information and the applicable tariff framework. Because the final price can depend on your exact address, time and tariff, obtain an up-to-date estimate rather than trusting a single fixed internet price.

A pre-booked transfer can be equally practical, but compare like with like. Check whether the quotation includes flight monitoring, waiting time, child seats, luggage and your complete destination—not just “Torrevieja”. Make sure you know where the driver will meet you.

Is hiring a car at Alicante Airport a good idea?

If you will spend your whole stay in a walkable part of central Torrevieja, a car may sit parked for much of the week. But if you want to compare neighbourhoods or visit properties around the southern Costa Blanca, the calculation changes quickly.

A hire car makes it easier to see how different places connect: the town centre at one end of the day, La Mata or Guardamar at another, perhaps a viewing around Villamartín or Pilar de la Horadada in between. These trips reveal something listing photographs cannot—how the roads, parking and everyday errands feel in real life.

Aena lists rental companies operating at the airport. Before booking, check the insurance excess, deposit, fuel policy, additional-driver fees and the office’s collection and return arrangements. For a property-hunting trip, also check parking at the places you intend to visit: a car is useful only if you have thought about where to leave it.

Once you reach Torrevieja: do you need a car?

In and around the centre, many everyday journeys can be made on foot. Torrevieja’s official tourism service also describes eight urban bus routes and a circular service connecting parts of the municipality. That is helpful, but it does not mean every residential area has a convenient connection at the hour you need it.

Before committing to a stay—or a home—look up the precise route from your address to the supermarket, beach, pharmacy and bus stop. Try it at the time you would actually travel. If you expect to live here year-round, repeat the exercise outside peak summer.

An airport transfer is therefore a surprisingly useful first test of the location. A place can be close to the sea and still leave you dependent on a car for shopping, appointments or airport journeys.

Visiting properties? Plan the journey around the areas, not just the flight

A common mistake is arranging several viewings along the coast and only afterwards asking whether they are realistically connected by public transport. Torrevieja, La Mata, Orihuela Costa and the towns towards the Murcia border should not be treated as one compact, walkable neighbourhood.

If you are coming to explore the market, build a sensible schedule: group viewings by area, allow time to walk the streets, and look at local services rather than rushing between front doors. You might discover that the area you expected to prefer is less practical than a nearby alternative—and that is useful information before buying.

A simple checklist before you land

  • Save the full address of your destination, not just the town name.
  • Check the operator’s current timetable in both directions and keep a backup plan for delayed flights.
  • Compare the total bus-plus-taxi cost with a taxi or pre-booked transfer for your whole group.
  • If hiring a car, review the collection desk, insurance terms and parking at your accommodation.
  • If viewing homes, allow time to experience each neighbourhood on foot.

So, what is the best way from Alicante Airport to Torrevieja?

For a central address and a convenient arrival time, the direct bus is often the simplest economical starting point. For a late flight, a larger group or a property outside the centre, a taxi or pre-booked transfer may be the more comfortable decision. A hire car becomes attractive when the journey is really the beginning of a wider trip around the Costa Blanca South.

The important thing is to choose for your real address and plans, not for an average journey time. If your visit includes finding a home, Ibeka Homes can help you plan a more focused shortlist of areas and properties before you travel.
